PRINCE2® 2017 – What’s New

PRINCE2 Has Been Updated

The PRINCE2 framework/guidance is owned by AXELOS. In May 2017, AXELOS released an update to PRINCE2. The update follows extensive consultation and feedback from Practitioners and candidates involved in the day to day use of PRINCE2. The main changes to the guidance are a greater emphasis on the following areas:
  • tailoring PRINCE2 to the needs of organisations and project environments; the principles that underpin PRINCE2;
  • clarifying the link between the themes and principles;
  • the restructuring of the ‘Themes’ guidance to accommodate specific examples of tailoring;
  • the practical application of the method and guidance, with numerous examples, hints and tips;
  • maintaining your certification through PRINCE2 Membership.
  • The new PRINCE2 Practitioner certificates have an expiry date of three years compared to the current five years.

What are the main changes to PRINCE2?

AXELOS has released a new edition of the PRINCE2 manual, plus updated training materials as well as updated Foundation and Practitioner examinations. The PRINCE2 update does not change any of the fundamentals of the guidance. The overall structure of seven principles, themes and processes remains unchanged. Specific details of the updates to PRINCE can be found on the AXELOS website.   Practitioners holding a current certificate will not be required to re-certify to the 2017 version but should ensure they decertify before the end of 2017. From the 1st January 2018 it will not be possible to take an English version of the pre-update (current/2009) Foundation, Practitioner or Practitioner re-registration exams. This will only be applicable for English language versions.
